Ian what are your favorite...
Q: Bands/Artists?
A: I really love Sonic Youth, I still think they're amazing.
Superchunk, Arab Strap, Shellac, My Bloody Valentine, Death Cab For Cutie,
The Bites, Interpol, The Shins, Sleater-Kinney, Failure, The Stooges,
And You Shall Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Fugazi, Damien Jurado, You
Am I and Guided By Voices are all pretty huge for me as well. I also like
Helmet, a lot. More locally, I really like Budd, Sandpit, Screamfeeder,
Art Of Fighting, Further, Two Litre Dolby, The Rational Academy, Tucker
Bs and Deloris. And it's weird but I also have nothing but kindness for
Jimmy Eat World, I think they're the Burt Bacharachs of indie-rock, ie.
not very cool but they write the hits.
Q: Movies?
A: The Graduate starring Dustin Hoffman is my favourite
movie. I'm also into most of David Lynch's stuff (I really like Lost Highway
and Blue Velvet), I like Woody Allen (Annie Hall and Deconstructing Harry
especially), The Coen Brothers (The Big Lebowski especially) but my total
obsession in movies for the last couple of years has been Hal Hartley.
Two of his movies just amaze me: Henry Fool and Simple Men. I think I've
snuck quotes from both movies into the Iron On liner notes and the like
over the years. Others movies I really dig are Instrument (the Fugazi
film), Akira, The Appartment, The Wild Bunch, Way Of The Gun, Buffalo
66 (I'm also kinda obsessed by Vincent Gallo), The Empire Strikes Back,
Jaws, American Beauty and The Year That Punk Broke (the Sonic Youth tour
movie). I've seen some great stuff lately but You And Everyone You Know
was probably the best of the bunch.
Q: Books?
A: I recently finished Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurty and
it's a hard to think of a better book. I also love The Black Dahlia by
James Ellroy (I love all his stuff), The Secret History by Donna Tartt,
The Dice Man by Dr Luke Rhinehardt, Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow,
Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut (and Slaughter House 5) and Fear
and Loathing In Las Vegas by Hunter S Thompson.
